One of the most requested items at my supermarket is simple syrup.  If the shelf is empty, customers are not happy. Until I tell them how easy it is to make.  It’s two ingredients and very budget friendly to make it yourself in less than ten minutes.  It can be made stove top or in the microwave.  Make it a few hours ahead to allow it to cool before use.  For the clearest liquid, use white granulated sugar and whisk to completely dissolve the sugar.

Simple Syrup

Makes 1 cup

Why buy it when you can make it?  That isn’t always an easy thing to do; however making simple syrup for cocktails and other recipes is easier than running to the store and searching for the bottle, that may never by completely used.  Simple syrup is two ingredients, can be made in the microwave and in small batches according to what you need.  Plus, there is much less guilt when you have to throw out the leftovers.  It’s a very simple ratio of one part water to one part sugar.  The recipe is for one cup, which is the least I like to make.

1 cup water

1 cup white granulated sugar

Whisk the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves.  Bring to a boil in a saucepan and boil for 1 minute.  Allow to cool at least one hour before using.

Microwave directions:  Bring the mixture to a boil in a glass bowl or measuring cup, bout 2 minutes.  To prevent an explosion, place a bamboo skewer in the container with the liquid.  Remove from the microwave and allow to cool completely before using.
